The DCEU has a rocky history with some really good installments, some very bad installments, and many “meh” installments that neither impressed nor offended moviegoers. Shazam is definitely amongst the latter. While many people praised it for its comedic tone and small scope, it did not really vow anyone. Fans are asking for the sequel but the voice of the crowd seems very quiet and weak.
On the other hand, the DCEU enjoyed a variety of success stories with other characters. Wonder Woman proved that DC heroes can be put on the big screen and make money while inspiring fans. Aquaman proved that a DCEU movie can be a blockbuster that makes literally billions in the box office despite its own flaws. Shazam was a great comedy with interesting adlibs and good acting as well as a whimsical premise that actually made sense.
The cohesion and solid pacing of the movie as well as its advantages can be credited to David Sandberg who recently revealed that he was not only standing behind the camera but also had not one but three cameos in the movie. Well, it is great that a director who made a critically acclaimed movie also was one of the extras in the film and we didn’t even notice.
First of all, we all know that Sandberg was the crocodile man in the film. It was confirmed by many people. However, his recent tweet clarified that he was also playing two other roles. Sandberg voices Travis (the BF of Billy’s mom) and Mister Mind revealed during the credits. These two were very wholesome cameos that definitely prove that this particular director can act. He may even drop the directorial shtick and just put on the costume of Mister Mind in the inevitable sequel.
What saddens fans all across the globe is that the sequel is not currently in production. The sequel is set to premiere in 2022. However, the studios right now are trying to figure out the release schedule for movies due to the coronavirus pandemic that already forced many movies to move. Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel II, and many other blockbusters had to change their release dates.
We have some information about the upcoming sequel. For example, we definitely know that the villain of the film is not Black Adam. Recently, it was confirmed that Dwayne The Rock Johnson will reprise the role in the solo installment sometime in the future. Black Adam is definitely one of the beloved antiheroes of the DC universe. He will most certainly face off against Shazam. However, Zachary Levi told fans that the duel is not even in talks until the third installment of the Shazam franchise. We still have to wait until The Rock shows us how cool Black Adam can look on the big screen before we will see the two fighting each other.
The sequel and the triquel are now a certainty. The first movie was critically acclaimed and managed to make good money. Even if the sequel is not up to par with expectations, even a mild box office success will guarantee that the third movie will be made. If Black Adam proves to be somewhat interesting and financially viable, the inevitability of the conflict between two superpowered characters will be apparent.
What we know for sure is that Mister Mind voiced by the director of the film will be present in the future installments of the franchise making David Sandberg a very important part of the DCEU even if he does not want to direct. Don’t worry, he already said that he will be happy to sit in the director’s chair once again to make the follow-up to Shazam!
